How to restart a service on macOS: GUI and terminal methods

You can restart a macOS service using System Preferences or the Terminal.

Method 1: Using System Preferences

Restart user-level services through System Preferences:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Navigate to Users & Groups > Login Items.
  3. Select the service you want to restart and click the minus (-) button.
  4. Restart your Mac, then re-add the service from the same menu.

Method 2: Using the Terminal

For system-level services, use the Terminal:

  1. Open Terminal (found in Applications > Utilities).
  2. Run the following commands:
   sudo launchctl stop <service_name>
   sudo launchctl start <service_name>

Replace with the actual service identifier (e.g., com.apple.apsd). 3.Enter your password when prompted.

To list all running services, use: sudo launchctl list
